If you’ve been curious about Pilates—or you’ve spotted those sleek reformer machines and wondered what they actually do—you’re not alone. At Align Reformer Pilates Studio in Portadown, we can't wait to meet beginners who are taking their very first steps into the world of Pilates. Welcome to your new addiction...you're in your Pilates era now!

To help ease any nerves, here’s exactly what you can expect at your first reformer class with us. (Hint: we like to make it fun so your abs might hurt from exercise and from laughing...)

Step 1: What to bring

Make sure you're wearing comfortable gym clothes- shorts or leggings are ideal. Bring some water with you.

You will need grip socks for reformer Pilates which can be cheaply purchased on Amazon etc but don't worry if you don't have any because we have our 'Align' socks which you can purchase at the studio.

Bring an open mind: You don’t need to be flexible or strong to start Pilates, everyone starts somewhere.

Step 2: Arriving at the Studio

When you walk into Align, you’ll notice something right away: calm, welcoming energy. We’ve designed our studio to feel like a sanctuary, with soft tones, "instagram-able" moments and a community spirit. You’ll be greeted by your instructor, who will guide you where to leave your shoes and belongings and answer any questions you might have.

Tip: Arrive 5 minutes early if it’s your first class so you have time to get settled. Remember there may be as class in session before you so try not to arrive more than 10 minutes early.

Step 3: Getting to Know the Reformer

The reformer may look a little intimidating at first glance, but we promise you it's not as scary as it looks! Think of it as a supportive frame that helps you move better—not a machine you have to “master.” Your instructor will show you how to adjust the springs, straps and carriage before you start.

The best part? The reformer meets you where you are. Whether you’re completely new to fitness or already active, the resistance can be tailored to your level.

Step 4: Warm-Up and Gentle Movement

Class begins with simple movements to activate your core and connect breath with motion. These warm-ups are designed to help you feel comfortable on the reformer, get your body moving smoothly and shake off any tension from the day.

Step 4: Flow Through Class

You’ll work through a series of exercises targeting strength, flexibility and control:

  • Core work to stabilise your spine and improve posture.

  • Leg and glute movements to build lower-body strength and stability.

  • Arm and shoulder exercises for tone and balance.

  • Stretching sequences to lengthen muscles and leave you feeling lighter.

Every move is done with precision—slow and controlled is the Pilates way.

Step 5: Cool Down and Reflection

Classes end with everyone's favourite- feet in straps (if you know you know). Gentle stretching and breathing to leave you grounded and refreshed. Many clients describe feeling taller, calmer and energised after their first session. But most importantly, they say they've found their new addiction!

Common First-Time Questions

“Will I be sore the next day?” You may feel muscles you didn’t even know you had—but it’s the good kind of sore, showing your body is engaging in new ways.

“Do I need to be fit before starting Pilates?” Not at all. Reformer Pilates is designed for all levels and your instructor will adapt exercises to suit your needs.

“How often should I come?” For beginners, 1–2 sessions a week is a great way to build consistency and see progress within a month.

Final Thoughts: Just Start

Your first reformer class isn’t about perfection—it’s about showing up, moving your body and discovering what Pilates can do for you. At Align, we’ll guide you every step of the way so you feel confident, supported and inspired. And we'll make sure you have a bit of craic along the way!
